Review: Fiddleworms - Volkswagen Catfish

With the release of "Volkswagen Catfish" in July (08), The Fiddleworms have been turning heads in Germany. In a recent review from the publication www.powermetal.de, the articles not only introduces the band to a global market, it lends more credibility to the diversity of music across the world and an attraction to "Rock and Roll" by Europeans. The article opens with "Deep in the heart of American music brings us this CD. The FIDDLEWORMS 'pack on their Album "Volkswagen Catfish" a great miracle bag of Rock & Roll, Country and Blues, 'with traces of Southern rock, reggae and jazz. And above all booms a Hammond B3" In summary, the article stresses that "Volkswagen Catfish" is an album for those who like melodies and consider themselves connoisseurs of good American music. Always on your mind ...

Concert mementos remain important to musicians, fans
By Jennifer Crossley,
Staff Writer

When Russell Mefford was a kid, he thought the platform-wearing, tongue-wagging members of KISS were like superheroes. Not only that, they came bearing gifts, temporary tattoos. "Every record that you bought from them, you got something from them," he said. Mefford is lead guitarist and vocalist for Shoals band, The Fiddleworms, which satisfies their fans with T-shirts and stickers. Thanks to Gene, Peter, Ace and Paul, they also included temporary tattoos inside of their last CD.

Nutt: Shoals is short on good venues

Investigative Article by Russ Corey

I could sense the frustration in Jimmy Nutt's voice.

Nutt, a recording engineer/producer/songwriter, owns the NuttHouse Recording Studio in downtown Sheffield.

I called Nutt to do some advance planning for a future Music Spotlight story on the release of The Fiddleworms' new studio album, which was recorded at the NuttHouse. I knew he had attended a Sheffield City Council meeting to ask about hosting a CD release party for the Fiddleworms at the Muscle Shoals Music Hall, which is adjacent to Nutt's studio.

Interview with David MacKay of The Fiddleworms

Interview by Scott Preston
CincyGroove Magazine

In the mid-1990s, The Fiddleworms emerged as the most important rock band working out of the Muscle Shoals, Alabama area. Taking their name from night crawler catfish bait, adopting stage personae like Splash Fiddle (Mefford) and Wolf Fiddle (Kennedy), and traveling to gigs in an orange stretch limo, the worms developed a large local following.

ManChildren in the Promised Land

...(A) rising partner in roots rock is the Southern psychedelic band the Fiddleworms, hailing from soulful, music-rich northwest Alabama. The heyday of Muscle Shoals music network, centered on Fame Studios, faded in the 80's but has been revived recently by the success of the Drive-By Truckers and assorted songwriters (James LeBlanc, who penned Travis Tritt's smash "Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde") and players like Scott Boyer III.
